An Even Greater Victory

By Martin Luther

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked.

An Even Greater Victory

Blessed is the man who does not go astray," that is, when so many thousands of the ungodly are about us that it is possible to say (Psalm 12:1): "Help, Lord, for there is no longer any that is godly; for the faithful have vanished from among the sons of men." And also with Micah 7:2: "The godly man has perished from the earth, and there is none upright among men." Is not he blessed and truly a man strong in faith who does not walk with the great throng on the broad way, who suffers much abuse and evil and still does not consent to walk with them, and who is not deceived by the attractive counsel of the ungodly which would lead even the elect astray (Matthew 24:24)? It is a great thing when a man is not overcome by riches, pleasures, and honors; but it is an even greater victory when a man overcomes the reasoning and the glittering righteousness of the ungodly, by which pure faith is attacked most of all.
