The angel of the LORD also said to [Hagar], "I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude."
This is an extraordinary promise. By it the terrified Hagar is again encouraged. For these are the divine successions: Comfort follows affliction, hope follows despair, and life follows death. Satan has the habit of doing the opposite. First he makes glad, then he disturbs, and eventually despair follows complacency in sins. Therefore let no one be disturbed in his heart when he experiences terrors and dangers, but let him take courage to hope that the Lord will again give comfort and encouragement. Because the godly have this sure hope, they pray so diligently and fervently for deliverance.
