Reaching the Heart and the Heavens

August 31, 2018
By Martin Luther

Your righteousness, O God, reaches the high heavens. You who have done great things, O God, who is like You?

PSALM 71:19

Reaching the Heart and the Heavens

In this verse at last the correct distinction between divine and human righteousness is depicted. For the righteousness of God reaches up to the heavens of heavens and causes us to reach. It is righteousness even to the highest, namely, of reaching the highest. Not so the human righteousness, but rather it reaches down to the lowest. This is so because he who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. But now the whole righteousness of God is this: To humble oneself into the depth. Such a one comes to the highest, because he first went down to the lowest depth. Here he properly refers to Christ, who is the power of God and the righteousness of God through the greatest and deepest humility. Therefore He is now in the highest through supreme glory.
