What Is Greater?

September 10, 2018
By Martin Luther

I will ... meditate on Your mighty deeds. You have made known Your might among the peoples.

PSALM 77:12, 14

What Is Greater?

Almost the same thing is said in Psalm 111:6: "He will show forth to His people the power of His works." This is faith in Christ, for we preach Christ crucified, the power and wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:23f.), Christ, that is, faith in Christ. It accomplishes these great things. What, indeed, is greater than conquering the whole world and its prince? What is greater than overcoming all good and evil things in this life? What is greater than crushing eternal death? Than for the soul to rise from sins and become a daughter of God, an heir of the heavenly kingdom, a brother of Christ, an associate of angels, a friend of the Holy Spirit? These are incalculable and so wonderful and truly great that the ancient miracles are barely shadows and figures of these. Therefore every man is ignorant of this power, but Christ the Lord has declared it to His people. This is truly the power of God which does the works of God. Therefore the strength of the works is His. For this is your victory which conquers the world, namely, your faith (1 John 5:4).
