No Greater Wrath

September 20, 2018
By Martin Luther

But My people did not listen to My voice; Israel would not submit to Me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels.

PSALM 81:11-12

No Greater Wrath

How much God is vexed by such guilt He shows here by saying that He will withdraw His hand and let the people go their own way, as Psalm 81:12 also says, "I gave them over to their stubborn hearts." But what could be greater wrath than when He permits us to act according to our own conceits, takes His Word from us, and permits men, yes, even the devil, to be our masters? What else can one have then but sects and disunity in teaching? Later, outward disunity with strife and rebellion follows from this disunity in teaching.
