The Power and Wisdom of God

September 27, 2018
By Martin Luther

Blessed are those whose strength is in You, in whose heart are the highways to Zion.

PSALM 84:5

The Power and Wisdom of God

They are those to whom the Lord Christ is Help and Strength, which comes about through their faith in Him, as 1 Corinthians 1:23-24 says: "We preach Christ to those who are saints as the Power and Wisdom of God." For in Christ they are strong and manly and blessed through faith…Hence he wants to say that he who is in the faith and spirit serves God out of the heart freely and joyfully and walks in His ways. Because the ways are in his heart, that is, in his affection and his will, they please him, and he loves them, for he walks in them out of love and from the bottom of his heart. On the contrary, those who are under the Law and the letter, since they do not have the spirit and grace, act out of coercion and unwillingly, out of fear and not from the heart, because they would prefer to neglect what should be done and to do what should not be done, if the choice were up to them. Therefore a hatred of the commandments is in their heart. But these very commandments have been outlawed from their heart, and they observe them only in a physical way and in the sight of men. The spiritual people, however, do it in the sight of God, because the ways are in their heart and please them. And this they do not have of themselves, but by the help of God, for "blessed is the man whose help is from Thee, or whose strength is in Thee."
