The Greatest Power

September 28, 2018
By Martin Luther

Blessed are those whose strength is in You . . . . They go from strength to strength; each one appears before God in Zion.

PSALM 84:7

The Greatest Power

How will one who has doubts and is uncertain in faith have substance, how will he ascend [cf. Psalm 83:6-7 Vulgate]? Therefore he says that the upward paths are disposed in a place which he had, however, previously fixed. Thus Christ says in the Gospel "only believe (Luke 8:50), "believe" (Mark 11:24), "take heart (Mark 6:50), "all things are possible for him who believes" (Mark 9:23). The greatest power is in the faith that must be established Therefore our psalm says at the end, "blessed is the man who trusts in Thee" (v. 12). But this is not to set a place. It is rather to set one's feet in a place. Hence to set a place is to choose something fixed on which a man may rest in faith and hope; that is, on nothing temporal, which cannot be established but is forever in flux. Rather, it is to choose what is fixed for eternity, namely, the Word of Christ, which remains forever, because it has been established.
