What God Has Prepared

Who considers the power of Your anger, and Your wrath according to the fear of You?

PSALM 90:11

What God Has Prepared

It is as if he were saying: "No one knows how great the strength of Your wrath is, and no one can withstand it, no one can escape it, no one can turn it aside, unless You will reveal to them what comes about through faith and spirit." But this happens in this way, that from the wrath of gentleness by which He corrects, since it is so great, as is evident in the martyrs, one gathers how great is the wrath of severity and in which way it condemns. Therefore, in order that they may know this, the wrath of gentleness must supervene and they must be corrected. So St. Peter draws the conclusion in 1 Peter 4:17-18: "But if the judgment of God begins with us, what will be the end of those who do not believe the Gospel? And if the righteous man will scarcely be saved, where will the sinner and the ungodly appear?" For as "eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither has it entered into the heart of man, what God has prepared for those who love Him" (1 Corinthians 2:9), so has eye not seen, nor ear heard, neither has it entered into the heart of man what God has prepared for those who hate Him.
