Waiting It Out

October 23, 2018
By Martin Luther

But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge. He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out.

PSALM 94:22-23

Waiting It Out

Let them preach, rage, and slaughter all they please! I am safe against them and mightily defended, for God is my Stronghold. Our teaching must abide, their fiction must pass away; for God is our Stronghold. Therefore we shall remain safe against them both here and hereafter, for our God is our Refuge; He makes us bold and secure. Not only that, but as a God of vengeance He will also destroy them, as the next verse says: He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the Lord our God will wipe them out. Here is the ultimate and certain judgment: God will not let their wickedness go unnoticed but will wipe them all out in their wickedness, and their wickedness will stop. And this will be done by "our God," whose Word we speak and whom they do not regard as God at all. . .. Whoever believes this and is instructed by God can be patient and permit the wicked to rage, for he considers their end and waits it out.
