Love, Trust, and Rejoice in Him

For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

PSALM 95:3

Love, Trust, and Rejoice in Him

In order to stimulate love for Christ and hatred for earthly things, and likewise hope and joy in Him and fear and sadness for the world, [the psalmist] says: "For the Lord is a great God and a great King above all gods." . . . Here is the Lord of heaven and earth, not now a David or a Solomon, who were little kings, and thus the kind of kings and lords who might nevertheless be servants under other gods, namely, angels, but One who is Lord alone and over all gods. Why, then, do you not love, trust, and rejoice in Him? For men naturally rejoice, if they can boast of a great king. Thus if you fear the greatness of the enemy and tyrant, behold, fear not, he will not harm you at all, he will take nothing from you, and you will lose nothing, for He is a great Lord and a great King above all gods. Therefore He can give you everything and safeguard from the enemies all that has been given. What then? Why do you not love, trust, and rejoice? Indeed, why do you not hate, fear, and grieve that you are not under this King?
