The Power to Preserve

The LORD sends forth from Zion Your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of Your enemies!

The Power to Preserve

The fact that Baptism, the Sacrament of the Altar, preaching, faith, the Holy Scriptures, and the confession of the name of Christ continue in the world up to the present time should be proof plain enough for anyone that this kingdom of Christ is being maintained and preserved solely by divine and almighty power. If this were not so, the devil would have been too mighty and strong for it. . .. But as long as there is one baptized Christian upon the earth, as long as one pulpit remains, yes, as long as the name of Christ remains known anywhere despite the devil's furious wrath and rage, this is due solely to the exalted and heavenly power of this Lord. Thus this article of doctrine, that He sits at the right hand of God with power, is not merely part of the Creed but finds confirmation in general experience. This again powerfully demonstrates the fact that this Christ is the genuine and true God and that He has the power to preserve His kingdom in spite of this mighty evil spirit and in spite of sin and death. . .. For the Father says here that Christ is to rule as God in His own right above and against all the might of His enemies, whether they be in heaven, on earth, or in hell—not through the help or protection of another but by means of the Word or the scepter He is to send out.
