Put Not Your Trust in Man

December 04, 2018
By Martin Luther

I believed, even when I spoke, "I am greatly afflicted"; I said in my alarm, 'All mankind are liars."

PSALM 116:10-11

Put Not Your Trust in Man

Literally this means: "In this affliction I learned that I must not trust in any man, because I, too, who said, 'I believed,' could fall from the truth of the faith." Unless God comes to one's assistance, the one who is truthful by confession quickly becomes a liar in suffering by the denial of the faith, as if to say: "This cup teaches that unless a person calls on the Lord, relies on the Lord, he himself will in no wise stand, because he is a man and will fall." Therefore it is the Lord who helps in consternation and in persecution, not man.
