Quick to Serve

November 05, 2019
By Martin Luther

Abraham went quickly into the tent to Sarah and said, "Quick! Three seahs of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes." And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly.

Quick to Serve

After Abraham realizes that these three guests want to stay, he joyfully hastens into the tent and prepares a banquet. For he is sure that in these three guests he is receiving God Himself. It is faith, therefore, that makes him so eager and ready. . .. But that physical appearance is a hindrance to us; and our physical eyes do not see the invisible yet truly present Guest. We must have inner eyes or faith. Since in Abraham this faith is most fervent, he makes haste for great joy and does not walk slowly. He delights in the opportunity given him to deserve well of brethren, and he does not make use of the service of his servants; but he himself starts to run and selects a calf. Furthermore, he orders to make haste and bake cakes. All these details are recorded by Moses for the purpose of stressing that glorious faith of Abraham, whose undoubting conscience persuaded him that he had the God of heaven and earth as a guest. Not indeed that he recognized God as he recognized Him later on, but he is sure that God is coming to him in his brethren. This faith makes him so eager, ready, and zealous, so to speak, to do the good work.
