Terror from God

As they journeyed, a terror from God fell upon the cities that were around them, so that they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.
GENESIS 35:5

Terror from God
The neighbors [of Jacob] were so overwhelmed by terror that no one dared even to make a sound, to say nothing of drawing a sword. For [God] shattered the power of their bows, as well as shields, swords, and warfare so that they were not ready and brave enough to fight, although they were otherwise very powerful and warlike. Nor did this happen through the services or stratagems of Simeon or Levi but by the power of the promise and the faith of the patriarch and his own, however weak it may have been. The Holy Spirit reminds us by this example that we should learn the doctrine of creation correctly, namely, that all things are in God's hand, and that we should accustom and encourage ourselves to confident trust in our Creator, which, to be sure, is still very small and weak in us. For if we firmly concluded that God is our Creator, we would certainly believe that He has heaven and earth in His hands and all things which are contained by these.
