God’s Call

Oh that you would hide me in Sheol, that you would conceal me until your wrath be past, that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me! If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my service I would wait, till my renewal should come. You would call, and I would answer you; you would long for the work of your hands.
Job 14:13-15

God’s Call
In the previous verses Job seems to question if there is life after death, yet here he confirms his trust in the Lord, saying he will wait until his renewal would come.  Later on he will give an even more forceful response with the words, “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth” (19:25). We should not judge Job too harshly for his waffling back and forth between doubt and conviction, after all, he is only human.  Ultimately it is the God given faith which Job has which keeps him from total despair.  He longs to hear God’s call so that he may answer Him.  We are reminded of the father of the demon possessed child, “I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24). We so often struggle with our faith and trusting God.  We, like Job, want to hear God’s call.  For many this means signs and wonders on a Biblical scale. They want burning bushes and parting seas.  And when that does not happen the seeds of doubt planted by the devil grow.  But we are given signs and wonders on a Biblical scale if we would just listen to God’s call.  In His Word He calls us to follow Him and in a miraculous way, with just water and His Word, sinners are made clean through Baptism.  He offers Himself to us in the Eucharistic feast where ordinary bread and wine, become the true body and blood of Christ, for us.  God calls us every day to live out our new identities in Him.
