Enduring Witnesses

Utter darkness is laid up for his treasures; a fire not fanned will devour him; what is left in his tent will be consumed. The heavens will reveal his iniquity, and the earth will rise up against him.
Job 20:26–27

Enduring Witnesses
As Christians we know sin is wrong.  We know we are to avoid sin and wicked ways.  Yet we still sin.  We still give into temptation.  We often delude ourselves by thinking we can hide our sins by committing them in secret.  Yet this is not the case.  As is pointed out “The heavens will reveal his iniquity, and the earth will rise up against him.” There is no secret place which we can hide in, there is never a night dark enough to cover our iniquities.  The heavens and the earth bear witness to all the evil which is done.  This is a scary thought if this is all you are taught.  And as powerful a witness as they are, there is still something more powerful.  God Himself has given witness to His love, care, and forgiveness of His people in His holy Word.  We have the enduring witness of God’s Word to testify to the truth of our salvation in Christ.  We have the enduring witness of God’s holy Sacraments, which testify to the life-giving faith given through them by the Holy Spirit. We have the enduring witness of Christ Himself, “Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.” (Romans 8:34)
