A Twisting of the Truth

Shall not all these take up their taunt against him, with scoffing and riddles for him, and say, “Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own—for how long?—and loads himself with pledges!” Will not your debtors suddenly arise, and those awake who will make you tremble? Then you will be spoil for them. Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder you, for the blood of man and violence to the earth, to cities and all who dwell in them.
Habakkuk 2:6–8

A Twisting of the Truth
The attack against our God began with a twisting of the truth. The enemies of God don’t have very many tricks up their sleeve. They are still twisting the truth and twisting words to attack the truth. They scoff, they lie, they deceive. The devil asks, “Did God really say?” and “If you are a Christian…” Their taunting never ends, but their subtle attacks continue, too. The taunts and the lies are like sweet honey to the itching ears of sinners. We want a soft law with a work around. We want multiple ways to God. We want to enjoy the pleasures of the body. We would rather enjoy the riches of the world than hear the truth preached about God. It is impossible for man. We cannot by our own reason or strength believe in God. We cannot come to Jesus Christ. He is a stumbling block and foolishness. But when the Holy Spirit intervenes, this Jesus Christ and his cross become a life-giving gospel. This Holy Spirit uses the truth—calling you by the Gospel, enlightening you with his gifts, and sanctifying you in the truth faith. That faith clings to Jesus who died for you, to forgive you, to grant you salvation, to make you foolish like himself. The world will hate the truth you have like it hates the truth that Jesus preached, but thanks be to God that by his work this truth is your salvation.
