The Sin of Man
“Woe to him who makes his neighbors drink—you pour out your wrath and make them drunk, in order to gaze at their nakedness! You will have your fill of shame instead of glory. Drink, yourself, and show your uncircumcision! The cup in the LORD’s right hand will come around to you, and utter shame will come upon your glory! The violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, as will the destruction of the beasts that terrified them, for the blood of man and violence to the earth, to cities and all who dwell in them.”
Habakkuk 2:15–17

The Sin of Man
The sin of man divides and lays waste. The sinful nature wants to make a name for itself and destroys everything in its path to get there. That sin causes great destruction. The devil and the world stand ready to encourage and incite. But sin causes great shame and vice. Where there should be glory, there is shame. Where there should be peace there is destruction. And for this all a payment must be exacted. The Lord Jesus comes to drink the cup of dread and death for you. He comes into the midst of our fallen and divided world to give unity and peace. How does he do it? He lays down his life in the midst of that violence and division. He offers up himself as the sacrifice to appease the wrath our sin caused. Thus, by his body and blood offered up on the cross, Jesus forges us together in the unity and bond of peace. He appeases the wrath of God and makes for a peace that the world cannot and will not understand. Where there is shame, he takes it away by his cross and gives us glory. Where there is division and hate, he unifies and gives peace. The blood of this One Man—Jesus Christ—has made for an everlasting peace.
