The Coming King of Zion

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11 As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. 12 Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double. 13 For I have bent Judah as my bow; I have made Ephraim its arrow. I will stir up your sons, O Zion, against your sons, O Greece, and wield you like a warrior’s sword. Zechariah 9:1-13

The promises of old all point to the coming of the Messiah. Jesus opens the Scriptures to the disciples after his resurrection and explains how all the Scriptures, beginning with Genesis, are concerning him. The people of God always think that he comes to restore the kingdom to Israel. They think that he is the one that will lead the nation against the earthly powers and principalities to independence and prestige. However, his kingdom is not of this world, and neither is yours. You and I put our trust in riches, but our riches are in heaven. We long for position, power, and money in this world, but Jesus promises a place at the heavenly banquet. For now, we see the King riding into the great city to die. He rides on a beast of burden to go to the cross and carry the weight of the sins of the world. He rides on a donkey to shed his blood. That blood is the currency he uses to pay the debt of humanity. He pays your debt and buys you back from death. He restores you double in his resurrection. Jesus is your warrior’s Sword. He fights for you. Great is his power to save.
