Baptism of Jesus
21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Luke 3:21-22

Baptism of Jesus
Jesus makes baptism what it is. He transforms ordinary water into something heavenly. God puts his Word and command in the water. John baptized for repentance and Jesus makes baptism a saving flood of the Gospel. He goes into the water and the heavens are ripped open. The Holy Spirit descends and the Father speaks. The Father speaks because he is well pleased with his Son. He speaks because he wants you and me to know that this Man is his Son, that Jesus is the second person of the Trinity making new what our sin had destroyed. When Jesus goes into the water he puts all his work and merit. He takes out the sin of sinful men from all time and all places. Paul will later say, “Don’t you know that those of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into his death…and if we have been baptized into a death like his, we will certainly be baptized into a resurrection like his” (Romans 6). Jesus puts in the goods of his Cross and Resurrection and takes our sin and death upon himself. It is the great exchange that is accomplished on the cross. It is Gospel for us. No strings attached and no price for us to pay. Jesus pays it all for you.
