Greater Things Than These

50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
John 1:50-51

Greater Things Than These
Jesus’ promise to Nathanael is breathtaking: “You will see heaven opened.” Our Lord points beyond the miraculous knowledge that amazed Nathanael to something far greater, the glorious revelation of Himself as the only bridge between heaven and earth. Christ is the true ladder of Jacob’s dream, the One upon whom the angels ascend and descend. This promise finds its ultimate fulfillment at the cross. There, heaven is opened not by human climbing, but by God coming down in mercy. The crucified and risen Christ unites sinners to the Father, reconciling earth and heaven by His blood. We see these “greater things” whenever we behold Jesus lifted up for us. In faith, we cling to Him who bore our sin and opened heaven for us. Like Nathanael, we confess, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God!” trusting that through Christ crucified, heaven stands forever open to us.
