12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

Like Jesus
In the name of the Father and the +Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Teacher is showing his disciples and you and me what it means to be the Christ. The Christ comes to serve. He emptied himself for the world. Jesus is crucified and dies for the world. He serves and makes new. He invigorates the believer to new things. The working of the Holy Spirit among us drives us to be like our Lord Jesus. Faith pushes us to become Christlike and cross shaped. Faith drives us to look away from our own belly and out to the needs of our neighbor. Jesus makes little Christs out of you and me. His blood has washed us of our sins and wrapped us in his righteousness. In the name of +Jesus. Amen.
