Cut Down to Be Healed

6           For thus says the Lord of hosts:
                        “Cut down her trees;
cast up a siege mound against Jerusalem.
                        This is the city that must be punished;
there is nothing but oppression within her.
            7           As a well keeps its water fresh,
so she keeps fresh her evil;
                        violence and destruction are heard within her;
sickness and wounds are ever before me.
            8           Be warned, O Jerusalem,
lest I turn from you in disgust,
                        lest I make you a desolation,
an uninhabited land.”

Jeremiah 6:6-8

Cut Down to Be Healed
The Lord exposes a people who refuse correction, whose ears are closed and whose wounds are treated lightly. Through Jeremiah, God calls out a sickness deeper than politics or enemies: hearts that no longer blush at sin. Such warning is not cruelty but mercy. The Lord disciplines in order to preserve His people, not destroy them. We recognize this familiar pattern, God’s Law reveals what festers beneath our excuses. When we resist His Word, we share Judah’s stubbornness. Yet the Lord who wounds also heals. He does not abandon His city; He calls her back. At the cross of Christ, the full seriousness of sin and the full measure of divine compassion meet. Jesus bears the judgment we deserve and gives the peace false prophets could never secure. Through repentance and faith, God restores what rebellion ruins. Hear His correction today as His loving call to life.
