Truth at the Cross

4           Let everyone beware of his neighbor,
and put no trust in any brother,
                        for every brother is a deceiver,
and every neighbor goes about as a slanderer.
            5           Everyone deceives his neighbor,
and no one speaks the truth;
                        they have taught their tongue to speak lies;
they weary themselves committing iniquity.
            6           Heaping oppression upon oppression, and deceit upon deceit,
they refuse to know me, declares the Lord.

Jeremiah 9:4-6

Truth at the Cross
Jeremiah exposes a people who live by deception. Neighbor betrays neighbor, speech becomes a weapon, and hearts refuse the knowledge of the Lord. Sin is not merely an occasional mistake; it becomes a practiced way of life. Judah’s constant deceit shows how deeply corruption has taken root among God’s people. Lies flourish where the fear of the Lord is forgotten. Yet the Lord does not answer human deceit with more deception. Instead He answers with truth revealed in the cross of Christ. There the sin we hide is exposed, and the judgment we deserve falls on His Son. The cross unmasks our lies and creates repentance through the Spirit. In Christ we learn again to know the Lord, who forgives sinners and forms a people who speak truth in His mercy. Because His grace frees our tongues and hearts to live honestly before God.
