Behold the King We Mocked
19 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. 2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. 3 They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands.

Behold the King We Mocked
Pilate’s soldiers dress Jesus as a joke: a purple robe, a crown pressed from thorns, blows and false homage. Here we see the bitter irony, what they mock is precisely the truth. Jesus is King. Yet His kingship is revealed not in power seized, but in suffering endured. The thorns recall the curse of Genesis; He bears it on His own brow. The robe of royalty is soaked with blood. This is no accident of history but the will of God, unfolding for our salvation. Here the theology of the cross confronts us. God hides His glory beneath weakness and shame. The world laughs; faith kneels. The soldiers’ hands strike Him, but our sin put Him there. And still He does not retaliate. He stands silent, allowing Himself to be mocked so that mockers might be redeemed. This battered King goes on to the cross, where His reign is established, for sinners like us.
