Enduring Nation
14 Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts:
“Because you have spoken this word,
behold, I am making my words in your mouth a fire,
and this people wood, and the fire shall consume them.
15 Behold, I am bringing against you
a nation from afar, O house of Israel,
declares the Lord.
It is an enduring nation;
it is an ancient nation,
a nation whose language you do not know,
nor can you understand what they say.
16 Their quiver is like an open tomb;
they are all mighty warriors.
17 They shall eat up your harvest and your food;
they shall eat up your sons and your daughters;
they shall eat up your flocks and your herds;
they shall eat up your vines and your fig trees;
your fortified cities in which you trust
they shall beat down with the sword.”
Jeremiah 5:14-17

Enduring Nation
The Lord made a promise to Abraham that he would make a mighty nation out of his offspring. Kings and princes were promised to come from Sarah and the nation of the living God would endure forever. But God's people have transgressed against him. Their sin has kindled his wrath against them. He calls upon another nation to discipline them. He calls forth justice for their sin. God calls for justice against our sin. His wrath is kindled against our rebellion. It is another mighty nation that releases their might against Jesus on your behalf. Like Babylon dominates Judah for its sin, so Jesus must be handed over to the Romans, to the Gentiles, to be crucified for you. He is the perfect Lamb of God and yet he is man. He takes the punishment that you and I deserve. He is obedient to the Heavenly Father to save and to rescue us. The promise is kept. A mighty nation comes from Abraham. By the blood of Jesus we are grafted in. We are purified by the righteousness of his cross. Thanks be to God.
