Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

In the heat of the moment, when passions run high, we want revenge. We want to repay the evil done to us with equal or superior might. However, evil has no place in the Christian life. Vengeance is the Lord’s work, not our work. Instead, the Lord fills us with his Holy Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit makes quick work of the evil that has been thrown at you in your life. You were called to bless, live in good works, speaking truth and love, and seeking peace. The eyes of the Lord have been cast upon you. He calls you his own child. He calls himself your God. He fights for you and with you against all that is evil against you. Thanks be to God that he has won the victory over sin and the grave by his innocent suffering and death and his glorious resurrection from the dead. He repays evil by killing it on the cross. He repays evil by taking sin and destroying on the cross. He repays evil by crushing the head of the serpent.
