Idolatry of Our Hearts

But like Adam they transgressed the covenant; there they dealt faithlessly with me. Gilead is a city of evildoers, tracked with blood. As robbers lie in wait for a man, so the priests band together; they murder on the way to Shechem; they commit villainy. In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing; Ephraim’s whoredom is there; Israel is defiled. For you also, O Judah, a harvest is appointed.

Idolatry of Our Hearts

The Lord always gives a warning before his heavy hand lays waste. The idolatry of our hearts is severe. We have run after other gods. We have created gods and boasted in the things made with human hands. God warns us about his first commandment. He reminds us that he is a jealous God and that there can be no other. He tells us that we cannot serve two masters. He warns us of false prophets and priests who do not serve him. The bloodshed from our sin cries out to the living God and his wrath is kindled against us and our sin. We must have someone to redeem us. This is the warning and the great good news for you and me. We do have a Redeemer and a Savior. He is the High Priest who bands himself together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, but he is also the High Priest that bands himself together with you in Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. Thanks be to God that he has called you out of your sin into the marvelous light of Jesus.
