On the Mountain

Blow a trumpet in Zion; sound an alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming; it is near, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness! Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains a great and powerful people; their like has never been before, nor will be again after them through the years of all generations.
Joel 2:1–2

On the Mountain
It was on a mountain that God gave his Law to Moses to give to the people. It is on the mountain that Jesus is transfigured. It is on a mountain that he dies for the sin of the world. Sound the trumpet! The day of the Lord is at hand. It was on the mountain of Calvary, on the day of clouds and thick darkness, that the Son of Man defeated death and the devil and destroyed the rule of sin over you and me. God keeps nothing of this back from you. He sounds the trumpet. There is no special level of privilege to know the mysteries of God. He reveals it all in his Son. The day of the Lord is the hour of the Lord: his cross. And like the ninth plague brought thick darkness upon the land of Egypt before the Passover delivered the people of God, so also thick darkness covers the land when our Lord is crucified for you. Do not fear, though. The darkness will not stand a chance against the light that is crucified there. The Light that comes into the Word destroys the darkness and acts as a lamp to your feet and a light for your path. Do not fear. Your Lord is near to you.
