Running After Other Gods

“I have heard the taunts of Moab and the revilings of the Ammonites, how they have taunted my people and made boasts against their territory. Therefore, as I live,” declares the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, “Moab shall become like Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a land possessed by nettles and salt pits, and a waste forever. The remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the survivors of my nation shall possess them.” This shall be their lot in return for their pride, because they taunted and boasted against the people of the LORD of hosts. The LORD will be awesome against them; for he will famish all the gods of the earth, and to him shall bow down, each in its place, all the lands of the nations.

Running After Other Gods
The Lord God has destroyed those who have ran after other gods before. He will do it again. In days of old he sent fire and sulfur from heaven upon the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. The enemies of God’s church taunt and jeer at God’s people. They say slick things that are designed to turn us away from the truth and to unbelief, despair, and other great shame and vice. The devil leads the attack with his lies and deceitful proclamations. But also, like in days of old, the Lord God will use his remnant to destroy these jeering enemies. He does not need a massive army. He does not need impressive weapons. He defeats these enemies with what seems foolish, insignificant, and weak. The people of God plunder the enemies of God. So, he puts before you the cross of Jesus. The death of the Son of Man conquers the devil. Jesus crushes his head even as he strikes Jesus’ heel. The Word of God is your sword and your armor. It is fit exactly for you. The armor is exactly the right size. The sword is the right weight and length for your battles. Just a dagger and yet so powerful and mighty to safe and protect. Your God has called you by the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection. He has enlightened and kept you with the gifts of heaven. He makes you holy and fights with you!
