Servant of the Church

16 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae, 2 that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well.
Romans 16:1-2

Servant of the Church
By nature, we serve ourselves and ourselves only. So also was Phoebe until she was transformed by Jesus' cross and resurrection. All of us, made servants of the church and our Savior by his death and resurrection. Our flesh would rather be reaping the fruits of pleasure, but our Lord puts our focus on the needs of others. We would continue to utterly fail at the Law, but Jesus puts his Holy Spirit in our hearts. That Spirit plants faith that grabs ahold of Jesus and his will. God, our Lord, unites with us in our Baptism and we are made new in him. By faith, we serve the church and our neighbor and even those that do evil against us. We are made different from the world. We are made like Christ by his blood and death. We are made like Christ in our Baptism and in absolution. What was impossible for us is possible with God. He grants it to Phoebe and to you. You are a servant of Christ and his church.
