The Writing on the Wall Begins with the Heart

5 King Belshazzar made a great feast for a thousand of his lords and drank wine in front of the thousand.
2 Belshazzar, when he tasted the wine, commanded that the vessels of gold and of silver that Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem be brought, that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them. 3 Then they brought in the golden vessels that had been taken out of the temple, the house of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from them. 4 They drank wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

The Writing on the Wall Begins with the Heart
King Belshazzar’s feast was a celebration of arrogance, idolatry, and spiritual blindness. In mocking the true God by drinking from the consecrated vessels of the Jerusalem temple, he desecrated what was holy. His actions revealed a heart that placed no fear, love, or trust in God above all things. This was more than a political act, it was spiritual rebellion. But God sees the heart, and His justice is not far behind. Still, in Christ, judgment is not the final word. The vessels Belshazzar profaned pointed forward to a greater vessel, the body of Christ, given and poured out for sinners. At the cross, Christ bore the punishment Belshazzar mocked, offering mercy to all who repent. Let this text be a sober reminder: mocking God is no small thing. But also remember the cross, where God's mercy overflows for repentant hearts. Fear Him, love Him, trust Him. He is faithful.
