The Way of Life Through Death
8 “And to this people you shall say: ‘Thus says the Lord: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death. 9 He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, but he who goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who are besieging you shall live and shall have his life as a prize of war. 10 For I have set my face against this city for harm and not for good, declares the Lord: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.’

The Way of Life Through Death
Jeremiah stands before a people who want reassurance, but the Lord gives something far more severe: a choice between life and death. Yet the “way of life” does not look like victory or escape, it looks like surrender. To remain in the city is to die; to yield is to live. This cuts against every instinct. We expect life to come through strength, but God delivers it through what appears to be loss. This is not mere political advice but divine judgment paired with mercy. God’s people must pass through humiliation to receive life. So it is with us. The way of life is not found in resisting God’s judgment, but in submitting to it, repenting, confessing, dying to sin. This is the shape of the cross. Christ Himself took the way of death, bearing judgment in our place. And through His death, He gives true life.
