Blessed Are You
5 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Blessed Are You
Jesus comes that we might become like him. He comes to fulfill and make new. He comes in unexpected places, but he comes to do unexpected things. He makes himself poor in spirit and poor in possessions. He empties his treasury to come in humility for you. He mourns for the men and women he created and loves. He who has all power and might becomes meek and gentle. He thirsts for righteousness, fulfills all righteousness, puts his righteousness into Baptism and wraps you with his righteousness. He does not give you what you deserve--he is merciful. There is nothing that can move him. He is pure in heart. His will is aligned with the Heavenly Father to make peace that surpasses all understanding. It is a peace that the world does not know. He is reviled and persecuted. He goes to the cross for you. So he wants you to be like him and he sends his Holy Spirit to make you like him. He transforms you by the power of his means of Grace. He grants you joy and gladness that cannot be taken from you. Thanks be to God for yours is the kingdom of heaven.
