19          O Lord, my strength and my stronghold,
my refuge in the day of trouble,
to you shall the nations come
from the ends of the earth and say:
“Our fathers have inherited nothing but lies,
worthless things in which there is no profit.
20          Can man make for himself gods?
Such are not gods!”
21 “Therefore, behold, I will make them know, this once I will make them know my power and my might, and they shall know that my name is the Lord.”

Jeremiah 16:19-21

The nations build their lives on what cannot save, false gods, false hopes, false promises. Jeremiah sees the emptiness of idols and confesses instead: “O Lord, my strength and my stronghold.” When trouble comes, every false refuge fails. Wealth cannot forgive sin. Power cannot quiet death. Human wisdom cannot conquer the grave. Yet the Lord makes Himself known. He does not hide behind silence but reveals His mighty hand and outstretched arm. Above all, He reveals Himself in the cross of Christ. There, the true God is known, not in the glory men expect, but in the suffering Savior who bears our sin. Jesus is our refuge and strength, the One who takes judgment upon Himself and gives mercy in return. The world still chases idols, but the baptized know the Lord’s name. He has claimed us as His own, and in Him we stand secure forever.
